August 2006 Disaster:
You have a thrush outbreak on your farm. How do you treat it
and how do you prevent it from happening again? I
was doing my routine grooming of my horses when I noticed a
foul smell coming from Zodiac Renai's front left hoof. As I
cleaned out her foot I noticed the smell getting stronger
and immediately knew I had a thrush outbreak in her. I don't
know how this could have happened since we live in the high
desert, but my guess is that this happened while traveling
on the road and competing with one of my workers. It was
pretty easy to clear up though. I kept her foot extremely
clean for the next week or so, kept it exposed to oxygen
since that can kill thrush and she recooperated in just a
few days. In the future I need to make sure to keep all my
horses away from wet/moist areas especially in enclosed
spaces with not a lot of air circulating. Thrush likes to
thrive in areas like that. All in all, easily solved and
preventable.
